Clothing & Shoes
Pack based on your destination’s climate, but a few items work for almost every trip.
- Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers
- Sandals or flip-flops
- At least one “nicer” outfit for dinners out
- Layers for air conditioning (airplanes, restaurants, hotel rooms)
- Pajamas or loungewear
- Underwear and socks (pack one extra day’s worth)
- Swimsuit (even if you’re not going to the beach — hotels have pools!)
- Rain jacket or packable umbrella
- Hat or baseball cap for sun protection
Toiletries & Personal Care
The items most likely to be left on the bathroom counter at home.
- Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss
- Deodorant
- Shampoo, conditioner, body wash (or solid bar versions to avoid TSA issues)
- Face wash and moisturizer
- Razor and shaving cream
- Sunscreen — SPF 30 or higher
- Lip balm with SPF
- Feminine hygiene products
- Hairbrush, hair ties, dry shampoo
- Contacts or glasses and solution
- Prescription medications in original bottles
- Pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen)
- Antacids and anti-diarrheal medication
- Motion sickness medication if needed
- Benadryl for unexpected allergic reactions
- Band-aids and a small first aid kit
A travel first aid kit is one of those things you only need once to be glad you packed it. Cuts, blisters, headaches, and upset stomachs don’t wait until you’re back at the hotel.

Documents & Essentials
These are the things you absolutely cannot forget.
- ID, passport, or driver’s license
- Wallet (cash, cards, insurance cards)
- Phone and charger
- Printed or downloaded copies of reservations (hotel, car, flights)
- Travel insurance information
- Any tickets or passes (digital or printed)
- Pen (you’ll need one for customs forms or hotel check-in)
A family passport wallet is one of those things that pays for itself the first time you’re rushing through an airport with kids — everything stays together, and you hand it to the agent instead of shuffling through a stack of loose documents.
Tech & Electronics
Don’t forget the chargers — seriously, make a separate charger checklist if you have to.
- Phone charger
- Portable power bank
- Laptop or tablet and charger
- Earbuds or headphones
- Camera and extra memory card
- Universal travel adapter (for international trips)
- E-reader or downloaded books/podcasts for travel days
A good power bank is one of the most useful things to travel with — especially on theme park days or long travel days when you can’t find an outlet.
A Kindle replaces a whole stack of books with one slim device that fits in your personal item — download everything before you leave and you’ll have entertainment for the whole trip without the weight.

Bag & Organization
The right bags make everything easier.
- Main luggage (checked or carry-on depending on trip length)
- Personal item or day bag
- Packing cubes to keep clothes organized
- Laundry bag for dirty clothes
- Small crossbody or fanny pack for sightseeing
- Reusable tote bag for souvenirs or beach days
A set of travel laundry bags keeps dirty clothes separated from clean ones in your suitcase — a small thing that makes repacking at the end of a trip so much easier and means you’re not doing the sniff test on everything when you get home.
Packing cubes are genuinely game-changing if you haven’t tried them. They compress clothing so you can fit significantly more into your suitcase without sitting on it to get it closed.

For Families & Kids
Traveling with kids adds a whole extra layer to your packing list.
- Snacks — more than you think you need
- Tablet loaded with downloaded movies and games
- Headphones for kids
- Small backpack for each child
- Extra outfit (or two) per child
- Diapers and wipes (plus a few extra)
- Child’s medications and any comfort items
- Stroller or carrier if needed
- Baby monitor if staying somewhere without one
- Beach toys or small entertainment for travel days
- Hand sanitizer
Give each child their own small backpack to carry their tablet, snacks, and a few activities — it keeps them independent on travel days and means fewer requests for you to dig through the main bag.
Car Trip Essentials
Road tripping? These make the drive so much more comfortable.
- Car phone mount for navigation
- Car charger or multi-port USB charger
- Cooler or soft cooler for drinks and snacks
- Reusable water bottles
- Trash bags (clip them to the seat)
- Sunshade for back windows
- Blanket and travel pillow
- Entertainment for kids in the back seat
- Emergency car kit (jumper cables, flashlight, first aid)
- Roadside assistance info (AAA, insurance card)
A car seat organizer for the back of the seat is one of those things that sounds unnecessary until you have four kids asking where the snacks are every 20 minutes.

Comfort & Sleep
For hotels, vacation rentals, and especially long flights.
- Travel pillow
- Eye mask
- Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones
- White noise app (or a small travel sound machine)
- Melatonin for time zone adjustments
- Slippers or flip-flops for hotel rooms
A travel white noise machine recreates the sleep environment your kids are used to at home, which makes bedtime in a hotel or vacation rental so much smoother for everyone.

Food & Snacks
Even if you’re not packing a full cooler, a few food items are worth bringing.
- Reusable water bottles for everyone
- Travel snacks (granola bars, trail mix, crackers, fruit pouches for kids)
- Small insulated bag for cold snacks
- Reusable utensils
- Instant coffee or tea packets if you’re particular about your morning drink
A freezable snack box with a built-in ice pack keeps food cold for hours without needing a separate cooler — perfect for road trips, day trips, or anyone who needs fresh snacks on the go.

Things People Always Forget
The classic “why didn’t I pack that” items.
- A power strip or extension cord (hotel rooms never have enough outlets)
- Dryer sheets (static and freshness in your bag)
- Ziploc bags in various sizes
- Stain stick or Tide pen
- Extra grocery bags
- Sunglasses
- Nail clippers and a small nail file
- Tweezers
- An extra set of earbuds
- A book or two if you’re a reader
- Stamps if you like sending postcards
The power strip is a non-negotiable for us. One outlet near the bed for four people with devices to charge? Not going to cut it.
Before You Leave Home
A few last things to do before you lock the door.
- Take out the trash
- Empty the fridge of anything that will go bad
- Set the thermostat to energy-saving mode
- Pause newspaper or mail delivery
- Arrange pet care
- Ask a neighbor to check on the house
- Lock all windows and doors
- Unplug small appliances
- Make sure you have your keys
- Take a photo of where you parked at the airport
